Supervises: Nursing Department Staff – RNs, LVNs, Unit Secretaries & Psych Techs
Purpose:
To provide leadership to unit staff, in order in ensure a safe and high quality level of care for psychiatric/chemical dependency patients. To ensure appropriate number of qualified staff to provide patient care; act as a member of the hospital wide nurse management team to establish policies and procedures which impact patient care
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• To provide leadership and direction, on assigned shift.
• .To ensure appropriate staffing for number and acuity of patients on assigned shift, utilizing float pool and agency staff, as needed.
• To participate in the nurse management team by assisting in the development of the hospital’s philosophy of nursing and policies/procedures.
• To serve as a role model in the delivery of patient care.
• To ensure the timely evaluations of assigned float pool staff and to give input into the evaluation of staff members on assigned shift.
• To verify appropriate licensure, certification, orientation and evaluation of agency staff working on assigned shift.
• To admit/discharge patients after hours in accordance with hospital policies/procedures.
• To obtain medication from pharmacy night locker after hours in accordance with hospital policies/procedures.
• Ensure proper handling and documentation of all emergencies, incidents, special procedures and patient complaints during shift.
• Communicates with administrator on-call regarding admissions and incidents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of appropriate nursing assessment, diagnosis, treatment, planning, intervention and evaluation of psychiatric patients.
• Ability to accurately administer medication and treatments and monitor for effectiveness and side effects.
• Knowledge of milieu management.
• Ability to supervise and evaluate staff.
• Ability to safely implement special treatment procedures and develop therapeutic relationships with adults, adolescents, children and their families.
• Ability to prepare and maintain appropriate medical record documentation.
• Ability to educate patients and their families regarding patient’s health needs.
• Knowledge of JCAHO Standards, Medicare and TDH regulations.
• Ability to formulate policies and procedures.
EDUCATION:
• Graduation for an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
• Current license in the state of Texas as an RN.
