Bilingual Spanish Law Office Apprentice Needed in Bakersfield (Bakersfield, CA)

Bilingual Spanish Law Office Apprentice Needed!

Be part of the legal team that is bringing about positive change for farm workers.

California is home to more than 40,000 agricultural employers and nearly 1 million seasonal and migrant farm workers. Many labor in the fields without basic protections such as legally required shade and cool, clean drinking water during the harsh summer season plus rest breaks, minimum wages and overtime protections. Employers routinely disregard state and federal laws designed to protect farm workers. Many often cheat workers out of their pay. Farm workers live in some of the most substandard housing, often cramming into small living quarters lacking basic necessities such as heat, kitchen or bathroom facilities.

Rampant violations of California's pioneering, though inadequately enforced, labor and employment laws mean the laws on the books are not the laws in the fields. Farm workers are frequently in dire need of legal representation. The Legal Department of the United Farm Workers (UFW) focuses on providing effective legal services that contribute to the growth of the UFW's organizing and collective bargaining abilities and the protection of farm worker rights. Significant changes expanding collective bargaining rights in the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act became law in January 2012 and there will be challenges implementing these changes. UFW attorneys manage cases in various practice areas, including labor law (ALRB and NLRB), Civil Rights, Contracts, Unfair Business Competition, and Wage/Hour violations, and UFW's Intellectual Property and Trademark protection issues.

The UFW legal department is currently recruiting qualified applicants who have an interest in becoming labor (union-side) attorneys by working with the UFW and enrolling in a state bar approved law office study program. The law office study program will provide an applicant with the opportunity to become a lawyer without the time and expense of a law school, while at the same time gaining practical experience with application of the law as it impacts farm workers. This opportunity starts with developing paralegal skills working full time on UFW projects under the supervision of UFW attorneys.. While performing work for the UFW, applicants will also be engaged in the study of the law. (Over the years six UFW paralegals became attorneys through this alternative to law school.)

An eligible candidate must demonstrate a commitment to social change and economic justice, evidenced by recent volunteer service. Candidates need to exceed in reading, writing and paying attention to detail. Ability to communicate (verbal and written) in Spanish is required. There is a great deal of flexibility and responsibility with this position. Only candidates who are highly motivated, highly disciplined, and capable of working independently in unstructured team environments are encouraged to apply.

The candidate must be willing to travel with reliable personal vehicle and spend several nights at a time away from home in addition to occasional evening and weekend work. The headquarters office is in Keene, Ca. (Keene is located 30 miles east of Bakersfield in the Tehachapi Mountains.)

Applicants are required to have completed two years of college education (60 semester units or 90 quarter units in a curricular program that, if completed, would earn a bachelor's degree) or have passed the CLEP (College Level Examination Program) with grades meeting minimum standards set by the California Committee of Bar Examiners. Bilingual Spanish is required for this position.

Salary: $2,775 per month; 100% paid benefits; cell phone allowance; mileage allowance; and laptop provided.

For a job description outlining the skills that will be developed working as a paralegal, a description of the legal apprenticeship program and/or an application, please send resume to: corporate.recruiter@chavezfoundation.org
